"Mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding are important abilities in physics learning because students need to understand concepts and connect them with mathematical representations when solving problems. A metacognitive approach involving planning, monitoring, and evaluating provides opportunities for students to plan, monitor, and evaluate their thinking processes. This study aimed to determine the improvement in students’ mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding after implementing a metacognitive approach in the topic of Uniformly Accelerated Motion (UAM). This study employed a quantitative approach with a Pre-Experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample consisted of 36 students from Class X1 of SMA Negeri 1 Banguntapan selected using purposive sampling. The research instrument was an essay test used to measure mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, N-Gain, and effect size. The results showed that the mean mathematical reasoning score increased from 75.56 to 88.06, while conceptual understanding increased from 62.78 to 80.83. The Wilcoxon significance value was 0.001 for both abilities. The N-Gain values were 0.56 and 0.50, respectively, both categorized as moderate. The effect sizes were 0.629 and 0.704, respectively, both categorized as moderate. Therefore, students’ mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding showed improvement after implementing the metacognitive approach.
