abstract: This study was motivated by the openness of the younger generation of Sedulur Sikep in Dukuh Blimbing, Blora, to globalization through mobile devices, social media, and formal education. Globalization is understood as an era that brings values such as individualism and consumerism that may conflict with the contentment and harmony found in Pitutur Luhur; therefore, moral internalization needs strengthening. This study aims to identify moral values, describe the process, and analyze the challenges and outcomes of moral internalization through Pitutur Luhur in the era of globalization.
This study employs a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving traditional leaders, parents/family elders, and the younger generation of Sedulur Sikep, then analyzed through data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification (Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña). Validity was tested through triangulation, persistent observation, and member checking. The theories used were Al-Ghazali's ethics, Muhaimin's internalization, and continuity and change.
The findings show that: first, Pitutur Luhur comprises five life goals reflecting praiseworthy qualities (demen, becik, rukun, seger, waras), five prohibitions indicating blameworthy qualities to avoid (ojo jrengki, srei, panasten, dahpen, kemeren), and three principles (speech, thoughts, behavior) that keep speech, intention, and action in harmony. Second, internalization occurs gradually through the transformation, transaction, and transinternalization of values, using modeling, habituation, stories and parables, and advice; at the transaction stage, each pitutur is instilled through daily social activities. Third, from a "continuity and change" perspective, continuity appears in Pitutur Luhur as a reference and in the family's role in transmitting values, while change appears in how values are understood, applied, and conveyed amid digitalization, social interaction, and majority pressure. The attitudes of "roso rumongso," "jangkep," and "pukoh" differ across age groups: firmly established among parents and elders (limited digital exposure), taking shape but still tested among the younger generation, and at an early stage among children (tentative, no child informants).
