N2  - The Masjid Kagungan Dalem is an integral part of the Yogyakarta Palace's cultural heritage, serving as a place of worship as well as a center for preserving religious, cultural, and historical values. Amid modernization and social transformation, sustaining these mosques requires the active role of the Abdi Dalem Pengulon in safeguarding their functions, sacredness, and architectural authenticity.
This study aims to describe the efforts undertaken by the Abdi Dalem Pengulon in maintaining the Masjid Kagungan Dalem and to analyze the preservation strategies implemented to sustain their functions and values. The research applies a sociology of religion approach integrating Mircea Eliade's Sacred Space theory and Pierre Bourdieu's Social Practice theory within a descriptive qualitative framework. Data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and source triangulation.
The findings show that physical maintenance is carried out through periodic inspections, strict renovation supervision based on Palace paugeran (customary rules), and architectural conservation to protect the sacred space (hierophany). Meanwhile, non-physical maintenance is conducted through religious rituals (such as Sekaten, Grebeg, and Hadeging Nagari), guidance for mosque personnel, and adherence to customary codes that shape the Abdi Dalem's habitus of devotion.
Preservation strategies are realized through architectural conservation, revitalizing the Javanese-style call to prayer (azan cengkok Jawa), and reinforcing religious activities to reproduce cultural and symbolic capital in society. Thus, the preservation of the Masjid Kagungan Dalem represents a dialectic between safeguarding sacred space and the cultural-spiritual habitus of the Abdi Dalem Pengulon.
