N2 - Jihad comprises one of the thought discourses of
the modernists and fundamentalists in moslem
society. Modernism exegeses Islam in the light
of rational approaches to adjust it to the change
in modern world and tries to harmonize religion
and modernization in moslem world. Meanwhile
fundamentalism calls for moslem community
to back to fundamental Islamic principles, in
the sense that the Islamic teaching is complete
and all-embracing. It is not necessarily interpreted
in the context of social change.
According to the modernists, which are represented
by Muhammad Rasyid Ridha, jihad is
meant as all endeavors of the believer to enact
the truth, right, and glory, as well as against the
batil Mukmin's jihad is to face himself by detaching
from lust drives and guide him to follow
the truth; strive to encounter sin-doers by preaching,
and giving alms either wealth or body. According
to Sayyid Quthb's notion, as one of the
representatives of the fundamentalist, jihad comprises
a struggle to destroy every power that
hinder Islam way; to free humand being to decide
belief faqidahj, to upgrade Allah's manhaj in
the world; to realize truth, maslahah, and to develop
community. To sum up, the interpretation
of jihad in the light of the modernist is inclusive
and relevant to the context of Indonesian society
nowadays, meanwhile that of the fundamentalist
that tends to be exclusive apparently is not
apt to the hereness context.
