They have to have high commitment to cope with empirical problems around him. Unfortunately, many outputs of this institution are incapable to contribute to solve the problems, even some of them are part of the problems, such indicators as the emergence of truth claim phenomena and communal conflict. Ought to is Islamic education the agent of social transformation leding to khayr ummah and rahmatan lil-‘alamin, but in reality even many social unrests occurred in the enclaves of moslem society. Ironically, it happened in moslem ummah itself internally. Though the problems are not caused by Islamic education itself in practice indirectly, but at least the process of education has many roles to form community’s mindset. Based on this consideration, this article tries to discuss Islamic education dealt with the paradigm of critrical pedagogy offered by Henry Giroux and Paulo Freire. It is focused on the meaning of critical pedagogy, prophetic Islamic education, and towards critical Islamic education. The new paradigm hopefully is able to give one of the alternative solutions in Islamic education mainly in shifting paradigm.
