Abstract

In this research, the researcher concerns in one problem that is how the development of children interest to read in Islamic Kindergarten DWP (RA DWP)of Islamic State University (UIN) of SunanKalijaga Yogyakarta considering the roles of storytelling. This research aims to know and describe the roles of storytelling to increase the children interest to read the books in RA DWP UIN SunanKalijaga Yogyakarta. This is qualitative research. The method of collecting data which is used is interview, observation, and documentation. To analyze the data, the researcher does some steps such as collecting the data, reducing the data, saving and then concluding the data. The result of the research is that storytelling has some roles to increase children interest to read especially when using the book as the media. After the children follow the activity of storytelling, their willingness to read appears. It can be seen from their interest to the books. The roles of storytelling to icrease children interest to read is make the children interest to listen the story, then make the children interest to see the visual aids, make children understand the story, make children interest to see the pictures in the book and make the children to spell the word in the book. Based on the result of the research, the researcher has some advice such as teachers can increase their ability in storytelling so that the children more interest to follow the activity of storytelling, add some books so that the children more interest to read or at least open the books to see the pictures on the books, utilize the books which are in the library and add some books to make it better.
