Abstract
This research is entitled “Adverbs in Obama’s Second Inaugural Address”. The subject is Obama’s second inaugural address and the object is adverbs. This research aims to analyze the type and the position of adverbs used by Obama in his second inaugural address. This research is a kind of descriptive qualitative research. To conduct this research, library research is used by reading several books: Modern English, APractical English Grammar, English Grammar and Composition, An English Grammar, and Practical English Usagecontaining the relevant theories and the theory of speech applied to analyze the address. After finishing conducting this research, it is found that Obama used eight of nine adverb types elaborated in Modern English. He places the adverbs into: initial, middle and final position as shown in the references. Obama uses adverbs of intensifying type more frequently than the other adverb types. The most frequent position is middle position and final position with the same number of adverb.
