Abstract

This research discusses the availability of library collections to the students reading interest class of VII and VIII in SMP Negeri 1 Piyungan. The purpose of this research is to know the availability of library collections toward the Student’s reading interest. This study is a survey using quantitative approach. The variable of this research is the variable of an availability collection (independent variable) and a reading interest (the dependent variable). The Methods of the data collection uses questionnaire, observation, interview and documentation. The data were analyzed using the correlation of product moment and simple linier regression and processed using SPSS version 16 for windows. The results showed that the availability of a collection has positive and significant effect on student’s reading interest the students of VII and VIII class in SMP N 1 Piyungan. These results indicated the correlation mark obtained at 0.594 with significance level 0.076 <0.05 (5%). The Availability collections in SMP Negeri 1 Piyungan with grand mean mark as 2.55 that can be concluded to be very good and the reading interest in SMP Negeri 1 Piyungan can be categorized to be very good by calculating the grand mean 2.68. Based on the test results of simple regression linear coefficients of the effect of the availability collection of the student’s reading interest at SMP N 1 Piyungan, by linear regression coefficients can be predicted that Y = 13.646 + 0.475 with Y (reading interest) and X (availability of collection). The Constants of 13,646 it is means if there is no increase in the availability collection of the students' reading interest in the amount of 13,646, while the coefficient of simple regression linear in the amount of 13,646 it is means that each additional availability of appropriate collection (+ sign), it will increase interest in reading SSWA of 0,475. On the coefficient of determination (R squer) obtained was 35.3 it’s means that the variable can be explain the lack of availability collection of student’s reading interest of 35.3%. It can be interpreted that 64.7% of student’s reading interest is influenced by factors beyond the availability of the collection is not examined. Library needs to add non-fiction collection but it should have relevant book according to the science progress and librarian should respond student complaint toward poor collections quality quickly and accurately.
