Abstract

The main objective of this dissertation is to investigate and study about Habib Husein al-Habsyi and his roles in the growth of Syi’ah in Bangil. As a scholar (‘ulama) and descendent of prophet Muhammad SAW, Habib Husein al-Habsyi feels deeply disturbed by a common phenomenon in which different Moslem communities blame one another, or even call each other as non-Moslem (kafir) simply because they follow different mazhabs. Amid this blame game and kafir labeling between Sunni and Syi’ah followers, Habib Husein al-Habsyi has a strong will to minimize the sources of dispute and maximize the spirit of the Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwwah Islamiyyah) among different mazhab followers by greatly valuing their similarities in the core teachings of Islam (usul ad-din) and discounting their differences in the branches (furu’) and not letting themselves trapped in a narrow fanatism of mazhab. It is acknowledged that after Islamic Revolution in Iran led by Ayatollah Khumaini, Syi’ah-as one mazhab in Islam- becomes more popular including in Bangil East Java. As a Syi’ah revolution leader, Khumaini plays significant roles in introducing and spreading teachings of Syi’ah Isna ‘Asyariyyah to the world, which is afterward known as an ‘exported’ revolution, and considered as a threat by many countries including Indonesia, particularly during the New Order government. The victory of Islamic Revolution in Iran becomes one of the reasons why this mainstream/mazhab is interesting to study in term of its early growth since Prophet Muhammad era and its religious doctrines. The next question that arises is how the Moslem Bangil people were before getting exposed to the Syi’ah religious teachings and who is the main figure successfully spreading these teachings in Bangil. In Addition, the factors that influence the wide acceptance of Syi’ah religious thoughts by Bangil society as well as roles played by Habib Husein al-Habsyi in this regards and the impacts of his thoughts on this society are worth investigating. The above questions are analized using qualitative method with historical approach in order to systematically and objectively reconstruct the historical traces of Syi’ah mainstream/mazhab in relation to its growth in Bangil East Java. Furthermore, sociological appoach is employed to observe the social interaction between one society group and the other society group (Syi’ah and Ahl al-Sunnah) in Bangil in which to some extent tolerance and understanding emerge due to similar teaching sources. This research finds that Habib Husein al-Habsyi, as a Syi’ah defender, places the concept of Islamic Brotherhood (ukhuwwah Islamiyah) as a way to attract Moslem society in Bangil to accept Syi’ah mainstream/mazhab. According to Husein al-Habsyi , each Ahl al-Qiblah from any mainstream/mazhab is closely bound in brotherhood. The spirit of ukhuwwah Islamiyah is implemented in the form of “understand one another” between those two mainstream/mazhab in Islam-Ahl al-Sunnah and Syi’ah . Although in other countries these two mainstream/mazhabs regard each other as infidels/non-Moslems and even kill one another, this ukhuwwah Islamiyah model that means “understand one another” between Ahl al-Sunnah and Syi’ah offered by Habib Husein al-Habsyi tend to be harmonically accepted by any society anywhere. However, it must be admitted that there are some people in Bangil society in East Java who do not share the thought of Habib Husein al-Habsyi. The spread and transmission of Habib Husein al-Habsyi teaching model seems to create a type of society whose different members understand that despite their differences they can live peacefully and harmoniously as Moslem brothers. The different mainstream/mazhab does not create conflicts among the mazhab followera, Habib Husein al-Habsyicsuggests that the differences should be able to create harmony in the life of Moslem society of any mainstream/mazhab of which Habib Husein al-Habsyi describes as “a big garden” rich in various halal and heavenly delightful fruits.
