Abstract

Phenol is a toxic and carcinogenic contaminant compound. It present is not only in textile waste, but also in hospital waste and peat soil. The dumping of untreated phenol waste directly into the environment can pollute the environment and threaten the existence of living things around. The observation on phenol degradation in previous research has obtained 7 isolates of phenol degrading bacteria from textile waste, hospital waste and peat soil. This study is aimed to determine antagonism among the 7 isolates and determine the ability of their growth and degradation of phenol, either by single culture or mixture isolates from hospital wastewater, textile waste and peat soil. The antagonist test was conducted using paper disc. The degradation test was performed by inoculating isolates into Ramsay media containing 300 ppm phenol. Bacterial growth was measured on isolates grown in TSB and Ramsay media containing 300 ppm phenol and incubated for 7 days. The phenol concentration and bacterial growth was measured every 24 hours. The result of phenol degradation test showed that the mixed culture of isolate 135 & 120 were able to degrade phenol more optimum than its single culture, while in TSB media, the mixed culture of isolate HG1 & SG3 has more optimum growth than its single culture. Therefore, the mixed cultures are predicted to have better ability of phenol degradation of fenol than single cultures.
