Abstract
In the perspective of history, the religious and cultural systems of Patani Malays in Southern Thailand have undergone evolutive developmental stages from animism and dynamism to Hinduism and Buddhism. This “old” culture has been handed down into the traditions and values as well as the mindset of the presentday life and culture of the Patani Malays. The arrival of Islam has brought changes in the religious and cultural systems of the Patani Malays. The Patani’s worldview was formerly based on the religious and cultural systems of animism, dynamism, Hinduism, and Buddhism in terms of their customs and traditions. This study examines the process of inculturation of Islamic values into Patani Malay’s culture in Southern Thailand. This study used a descriptive-analytical method and an historical-anthropological approach. This study researches the Patani Malay’s religious system and culture as manifested in their everyday life and the dynamic relationship of Islamic values and local culture. In so doing, the study can describe and analyze the development of Islamic values in Patani Malay’s culture. The contiguity and blend of Islamic values and Patani Malay’s culture have eventually facilitated the process of its inculturation into Patani Malay’s religious system and culture. The study produces three important findings: first, Patani Malay society is considered very isolated from the majority Thai Buddhist society. Muslim community in Patani Malay is characterized as a rural and closed society in which Islam is the most associated identity of Patani Malays in Southern Thailand. Secondly, the arrival of Islam in Patani Malay society is believed to be the meeting point of Islamic values and the Patani Malay’s culture, i.e. the inculturation process of Islam into Patani Malay’s culture. The success of Islam in transforming Patani Malay’s culture is indeed the beginning of the blend of Islamic values and local culture. Third, the Patani Malay’s religious systems still contain some elements of local culture. This is due to their adherence to their old beliefs and customary practices which then leads to syncretism, i.e. the mixture of Islamic values and local culture. In the end, the combination of Islamic values and Malay culture has thus created a new color of the religious and cultural system of Patani Malay community in Southern Thailand.
