Abstract

This thesis, entitled the role of Giri Maju Pakualaman community library as a learning center to support specialty of Yogyakarta, was a qualitative case study conducted in Giri Maju community library in RW 09 Gunung Ketur Pakualaman Yogyakarta. It investigated how significant the role of Giri Maju community library which served as a learning center to support specialty of Yogyakarta. The objective of this study was to find out: (1) the profile of Giri Maju community library, (2) the role of Giri Maju community library as a learning center in RW 09 Gunung Ketur, (3) the role of Giri Maju community library as a learning center in RW 09 Gunung Ketur Pakualaman to support specialty of Yogyakarta, and (4) the obstacles faced by the community library regarding with the aforementioned roles. The study was conducted in a social situation which occurred in the setting of the study involving the aspects of place, doers, as well as the activities done in Giri Maju community library. The subjects of the study were the organizer of the reading room, an active librarian, a representative of the local government, and also a representative of the community. This study employed in-depth interview, observation, and documentation. In analyzing the data, the writer applied Miles and Huberman’s interaction model which focuses on data gathering, data reduction, data display, and data verification. The data validity tests included data credibility test, transferability test, dependability test, and confirmability. The result of the observation and documentation revealed the roles of Giri Maju community library as a learning center, which served as the center of (1) reading activity, (2) the place to borrow literatures, (3) the block of study time, (4) sports, (5) arts, (6) English language training, (7) entrepreneurship, (8) drugs tackling, and other community activities. The roles of Giri Maju community library as a learning center to support specialty of Yogyakarta were (1) making the local interested in reading the various literature provided by the community library, (2) serving as a center of culture, (3) functioning as an agent of culture, and (4) acting as an agent of change. The obstacles faced by the community library in carrying out those roles were (1) the limited competence of the reading room’s organizers, (2) the limited management standard of the community library, (3) the limited facility, and (4) the lack of organization among the organizers. The recommendation offered by this study is that it is important to make the profile of Giri Maju community library as a stepping stone in order to develop the community library also as a reference for various parties.
