Abstract

The main issues addressed in this study are the meaning and nature of word Qalb in the Qur’an. In general, some theories say that Qalb means heart, and in Arabic it etymologically also means the heart, which is one of the organs inside the human chest to the left which is always pulsing to pump blood throughout the body. However, some verses of the Qur’an indicate another meaning, in which Qalb determines the value of human life; whether innocent or not a person is, it is determined by Qalb; and Qalb is the one thing which thinks, Qalb is the thing that understands and Qalb is the one thing that is asked for its accountability later in the afterlife. Thus, this study deals with the sense and essence of Qalb in the Qur’an, the characteristics of Qalb, and how to build Qalb to keep it working properly? This is a library research. The data analysis used content analysis on the material object in the form of verses of the Qur’ran by using Thematic Interpretation Method approach ) التفسير الموضوعى ) (al-Tafsir al- Maudhu’i) as a formal object. The objective of this research is to find the valid and concrete data or theories about the meaning and nature of Qalb in the Qur’an. This research results in several conclusions. There are two senses of Qalb, namely: first, in the physical sense, that is an elliptic piece of meat that is located inside the left chest in which there are cavities and which is referred to as the ‘heart’. The second meaning is a psychic sense as something subtle that is divine, ie, human nature that can capture understanding, knowledge and wisdom. Qalb is ‘Spirit’ which is the essence of man who has the ability to understand such a sense (mind), appreciation, feelings, and so forth. Qalb is also called Shadr because it is where the light of faith and Islam rises as called fu’ad for being the place of the emergence of ma'rifat to Allah, and called lubb, for being the issuance of monotheism. Qalb can experience many diseases although it can be treated. It needs guidance that keeps it functioning properly for the benefit and happiness of human life itself, in the world and in the hereafter.
