Abstract

The most interesting phenomenon of the migration of the population is the change in lifestyle and social status in society. Indonesian migrant workers continues to increase every year from various regions. Although it is often violence against migrant workers who are outside the country, but did not make the Indonesian people give up to become migrant workers. Cultural differences and customs also affect the lifestyle of migrant workers. And with the economic factors experienced by migrant workers provide a change of social status in society. In the study aimed to determine changes in lifestyle and social status of migrant workers in the village of Kalikatak. so the results of this study are expected to provide diverse information for the development of religius social sciences, and for the development planner kalikatak village area in anticipation of the social and demographic problems that exist. This research is qualitative field research. Primary data from this study consisted of interviews and observations of former migrant workers and interviews with village communities kalikatak as additional information. Secondary data sources such as books or magazine articles related to this research. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, dokumentasi. Then the data is collected and analyzed using sociological approach and using the theory of lifestyle from Chaney and the social Status of Liph Linton. From the results of research conducted, lead to the conclusion that changes in lifestyle and social status of migrant workers owing to increased economic factors the village Kalikatak, resulting in a change in lifestyle in terms of clothing, behavior, mindset, level economic and dialects. Changes in migrant workers can be positive and negative. The changes are carried to hometown and become their lifestyle every day. Social status of migrant laborer is experienced in increasing. At first, they have lower status at society. However by being a migrant laborer and getting an income above on the average, they can change their social status at society. In addition, they also step into a new position at society as a new midle class as their identity. After being a new midle class at society, they get a special place by getting honor from society. However, it scenis like a contradiction when we realize that they were threatened in bad before they were a migrant laborer in Malaysia.
