Abstract

This research aims for understanding how the library development based on community with case study to Gelaran I-Boekoe Community Public Reading in Yogyakarta. This research is a descriptive research which is done in case study with qualitative approach. Data collection technique uses participative observation, interview, and documentation. Data analysis is conducted with Miles and Huberman model which is data reduction, data serving, concluding, and verification. In this research, validity test is conducted with methods of observation extension and perseverance improvements. From the analysis, it can be concluded that (1) The existence of Gelaran I-Boekoe Community Public Reading is a pure idea from community without any hand from governments and its establishment is based on the concern of community toward the condition of surrounding society. (2) Library development based on Community Gelaran IBoekoe Community Public Reading is conducted through holding program and activities which involves society directly. Those Programs and activities are like twilight chats, reading group, cine book club, learning together through writing about village history, archive revitalization movement, book bike, archive table, book sound bulletin, and shopping book together. (3) Through the program and activities which have been conducted, Gelaran I-Boekoe becomes media for learning together and developing intimacy in the society and also becomes a place for developing people’s reading interest. (4) The obstacles which are faced by Gelaran I-Boekoe from the beginning of establishment and the development of public reading is about operational fund, cadre, and relations. A recommendation for place of research is it will be nice for Gelaran I-Boekoe to have cooperation with public library, regional library, or other organizations in order to increase the interest of reading and to give large information access for society.
