Abstract

The background underlying this research is that Muslim community often makes blessing as a living value in their lives, among others, issuing zakat (a form of obligatory alms-giving). This study aimed to determine the concept of the blessing of zakat and the muzaki’s perception about the blessings and to find internal factors that affected the muzaki (Muslims who are obliged to issue zakat) in issuing zakat to zakat institutions. These factors were the service of zakat institutions, muzaki’s religiosity, feeling blessed, gender, education level, and occupation, whether all of which affected the propensity of their choice in issuing zakat to zakat institutions. The theory used the theory of religious motivation by Clifford Geertz. This type of study design was exploratory research design, in which researchers collected qualitative data in the category of infinity, with a 95% confidence level or margin of error of 5% with a total sample of 396 respondents in the traffics of Joglosemar (Yogyakarta, Solo, and Semarang). Sampling used purposive random sampling. Data collection used questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation. For data analysis tools, this study used multiple regression analysis with Tobit models. The findings in this study showed that the blessing of the zakat for a Muslim was to obtain abundant, diverse, and unlimited virtues, in physical forms such as increased property, adequacy needs although the wealth did not grow or grow a little, avoided disease and avoided distress and in non-physical forms such as serenity, tranquility, peace, happiness, inner satisfaction and feeling that God is pleased with and accepts his charity. In addition, there was also a general nature (physical and non-physical), such as enjoying the property and obtain facilities from Allah (in each step), all of which are the result of a Muslim faith and piety to Allah s.w.t. Also, it was noted that 98% muzaki stated that they felt the blessing in the zakat and the highest they think was serenity, tranquility and peace. The feeling of blessing by issuing zakat and occupational factors did not significantly influence the preferences of muzaki to issue zakat to certain zakat institutions. For the service of zakat institution, gender, and education level, they significantly and positively affected the preferences to issue zakat to zakat institutions. The variable of muzaki’s religiosity negatively affected the trend in the choice of muzaki to issue zakat to zakat institutions significantly. Keywords: muzaki, zakat institutions, blessing
