Abstract

This article explores the problem of understanding Qur'anic verses which contain ellipsis as explored by Ibn Qutaybah in Ta'wil Musykil alQur'a- n. Ibn Qutaybah mentions 8 types of ellipsis in the Qur'an. Ellipses commonly occur in sentences that could be understood in its original compositions. The Ellipses must be indicated clearly by extra-textual relation, whether in advance or fol.lowing phrases as the readers could understand it. At the same time, ellipses must consolidate the Qur'anic meaning whether commonly or specifically. There are two objectives of ellipses, namely to simplify the verses (Ikhtisaran) and to show the Qur'anic miracle (I'jaz). Kata Kunci: Elipsis, Ellipted Phrases, Ikhtisar, l'jaz.
