Abstract

Academic references such as books, journals, thesis and dissertations are essential for students’ academic activities. Mostly, even not all, good quality of academic journals are written in English especially some academic journals which have high reputation in the world such as several academic journals from Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge and other qualified academic journals issued by universities or academic associations. Unfortunately, Indonesian university students have low English skills that hamper them to use English academic references in their thesis. In fact, the causes of the lack of using English references is not only their low English skills but also low reading habit, lack of writing experiences, and curriculum which does not ask students to read and write more. By this reason, in this research, the researche discuss the main factors that obstruct students to use English references in writing undergraduate thesis and other academic writings. In this study, the researcher employs qualitative research method by using interview and studying the printed report of students’ academic works in Library Department, Faculty of Cultural Studies, State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.
