Abstract

Religious heterogeneity is not something new in Indonesia. History notes that the religious challenge of the local religion diversity has become a hallmark of Indonesia since its early history. However, the problems related tc religious diversity came later after Christianity and Islam started to exist and flourish. Fears of the dysfunction and counter-productive movement in religions inspired some of the religious figures to establish Institut DIAN (Dialog Antar-Iman di Indonesia)!Interfidei (!Institut for Inter-faith Dialogue in Indonesia) in 1992. This institution stands on the belief that all religions basically have similarities in their orientation toward the service to mankind, so that human beings can improve their quality of life for the common welfare. The term "inter-faith" was chosen to give impression that it does not only accommodate any 'faith' considered as being deserved to get the label of 'religion'. The institution started its "great project" by publishing a bibiography of the annotations of Islamic literature of the 1980s. This project just completed in 1998 under the title Anotasi 200 Buku Islam Kan;a Muslim Indonesia. The institution has more conceptual-theoretical movements diffused among Indonesian young generation. It believes that diffusing the discourse of pluralism will give more significant influence and positive effects that can last much longer than providing the problem-solving movements to the society who are facing the problem of pluralism.
