Abstract

Instagram’s presence in modern society, renders new habit of sharing photo in social media platform easily. The capability of Instagram above is certainly become an answer for among circle who have a narcissistic action in social media. Consumption of Instagram is increasing in modern society, inevitably caused by feature of Instagram that enabling persons to take a picture, apply digital filters and share picture to another social media platform. The excellence of Instagram to display visual advance, causing this social media is not only as a medium for sharing information but also symbolically as a communication medium that directs its user to create lifestyle as user desired. Therefore this case triggers a phenomenon of user come to see classy places and another popular spot then make a sharing picture activity on Instagram is increasing. This research aims to describe of how to use digital features on Instagram as symbolic interaction media in creating lifestyle for consumer who visit Secret Garden Coffee & Chocolate in Yogyakarta. This research uses qualitative descriptive approach by collecting data on several techniques such as deep interview, observation and documentation. This research uses theory entitled Symbolic Interaction by George Herbert Mead. Result from this research displays that Instagram social media, has been used as a symbolic interaction media in creating its user’s lifestyle by uploading photo and geotagging on its features in Instagram platform. By uploading picture and insert a caption on it, and apply location where user take picture, these actions are used as symbolic of communication media to show desirable lifestyle as they want to be seen. To achieve goals of desirable lifestyle which has been created on each user, user does not upload picture on all events to Instagram, but only upload certain desirable places that they want to share, for instance popular places, and another classy that has good reputation on society.
