Abstract
This research titled, clothes are as media of artifactual communication in forming social identity of veil-worn female students in UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. A problem researched is that veil as media of artifactual communication becomes a forming process of identity of female students. This is for knowing that veil is as social object and media of communication that build social identity of female students. The research method used is descriptive-communicative method, with interactive data analysis technique of Miles and Huberman, or also called as interactive model. This technique consists of three components; they are data reduction, data presentation, and withdrawal and conclusion testing. The theoretical basis used in studying and analyzing this phenomenon is the theory of artifactual communication with the dimensions of clothing information and the social identity theories of Tafjel and Turner. This research concludes that veil becomes the media of artifactual communication in forming the social identity of female students, the process of communicative formation, through the process of interpreting the message of meaning of veil in the social environment and establishing perception and positive stereotype to female students. The interpretation is a nonverbal message in dimensions of emotional information, behavior, and differences. Thus, it is formed a symbolic interaction in dimension information about veil with the existence of a particular response and feedback. These interactions result in self-categorization, self-identification, and social comparison in conceptualizing self and social female students. This model is to show that veil is a social object that becomes an attribute of social groups and categorizes veiled students and produce a social identity to veiled students themselves.
