Abstract

Cultural differences show there are habits, norms and values that influence the communication process to understand each other. Couchsurfing is a non-profit social media with an international scale that connects tourists with local people. There are host and surfer functions on Couchsurfing bring individuals with different cultures to interact with each other especially those in Yogyakarta. Hosts who are local people receive the requests from surfers who are from different regions or countries with different cultures. This condition causes Couchsurfing users in Yogyakarta to experience anxiety and uncertainty to communicate with them. This research is a qualitative with descriptive methods and the aim of knowing about anxiety and uncertainty management on Couchsurfing users in Yogyakarta. The data collection methods in this study were conducted with indepth interviews and documentation. As for the validity of data used triangulation of data sources. In this research, anxiety and uncertainty management theory is proposed by Gudykunst in expressing the effort of management of anxiety and uncertainty with communication elements related to verbal, non verbal message and perception to achieve effective intercultural communication. This research shows that host of Couchsurfing users in Yogyakarta can manage anxiety and uncertainty based on AUM theory done with strengthen self concept, empathy and tolerance, have knowledge and strong motivation and build closeness.
