Abstract

The ideal relationship between husband and wife in household life is basically based on a principle that is “muā'syarah bil al-ma'rūf” (good relationship between husband and wife) on the other hand the wife also has an obligation to obey the husband. This concept is for the sake of realizing a happy family (sakinah, mawaddah, warahmah). The traditional role of the husband is responsible for the livelihood of the family and wife as housewives. Community socialization continues incessantly with changes according to benefit. Age is growing and family needs are increasing. This increase in needs influences the role between husband and wife so as to make the wife take part in meeting economic needs. The people of Klaten city have been following the times so that it also influences the role between husband and wife. The relationship between husband and wife will change along with the role between husband and wife. As for what is meant by social status in this study focused on the economic level. This research is a field research, with descriptive-qualitative model, using a phenomenological approach with the perspective of legal sociology. Data collection through in-depth interview process. Based on the results of the analysis, the first conclusions are obtained, the pattern of husband and wife relations when viewed from the aspect of the division of labor (domestic) produces two typologies namely, 1. The division of labor (domestic) is divided based on ability and expertise; 2. The division of labor (domestic) is flexible. The pattern of fulfillment of livelihood produces two patterns, namely, 1. The pattern of cooperation between husband and wife to meet family needs; 2. Pattern of husband‟s dominance. The pattern of decision making in religious understanding produces two typologies, namely, 1. Equal partner; 2. Domination of one party. Factors affecting the pattern of relations in a husband and wife relationship are, first: marriage adjustment, and second: communication between husband and wife.
