Abstract

Isolation of humin and its application as adsorbent has been done. Isolation of humin derived from Sumatran peat soils using alkali extraction methods. The isolation results were characterized using FTIR, then determined the total acidity, carboxylic group, and phenolic -OH group to determine the content of the functional group in humin. The humin application as naphthol dyes adsorbent was studied to determine the effect of pH, kinetics of sorption and isotherm of sorption. Based on the characterization results it can be assumed that the humin has been isolated which is characterized by absorption at 3425.3 cm-1 wave number indicating the presence of -OH group and at a wave number of about 1705 cm-1 showing the vibration C=O of the -COOH group . Further characterization to support these assumptions is by determining the total acidity, the -COOH group and the phenolic -OH group. Based on the result of the research, the total acidity value of the isolated humin is 508,47 cmol kg-1, the content of -COOH group is 289,42 cmol kg-1 and the content of phenolic -OH group is 219,05 cmol kg-1. The optimum adsorption reaction was achieved at the pH of the naphthol dye solution at 2, the reaction rate constant (k) is 23,2257 g mol minutes-1 with Ho's kinetics model, the adsorption capacity (qmax) is 0,5694 mmol g-1 with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and its potential energy is 20,7797 kJ mol-1.
