Abstract

At State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga, it can be observed there are many official employees who successfully have given exclusive breastfeeding notwithstanding there has been no breastfeeding-room yet. Therefore this research will discuss about how official employees give exclusive breastfeeding without facility after maternity leave. Specifically these research problems are firstly how do the power relation happen on campus? Secondly how do official employees, at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, give exclusive breastfeeding after the end of maternity leave? Thirdly what is the factors which can urge the exclusive breastfeeding, and what is the obstacle of it? To answer these questions, this research used Hanna Arendt’s theory— public space--strategy and tactic theory of Michael de Certeau, and Fritz Heider’s theory of attribute. These theories had been seriously useful to observe how official employees, at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, give exclusive breastfeeding after the end of maternity leave without breastfeeding-room. It is field research which used a social-anthropological approach and three collecting methods of data, such us, observation, interview, and documentation. It also utilise snowball sampling technique to seek an informant so its technique can facilitate researcher to find some official employees giving it. Data validity was done by triangulation, and analyzed descriptively-analytically. The result of this research shows facts. Firstly, the power relation of official employees at UIN Sunan Kalijaga has been not equal yet, especially for woman official employees. So far campus has not had a special regulation for female official employees as public facility, but it is endeavoring to accommodate their necessities—the availability of day-care for their child. Secondly, they use creatively the certain tactics to give the exclusive breastfeeding after maternity leave leave, for example, breastfeeding at musala (small mosque), workspace, toilet, and library. Thirdly, the success of exclusive breastfeeding is not determined of cleverness or skill and profession class, but it is determined by family support— wahnan ‘ala wahnin—and day-care. The obstacle factors of it are the maternity leave nervousness of female official employees, breastfeeding at workspace which is considered as troublesome thing, and embarrassed sensation to do it at campus.
