Abstract

This study aims to elicit pre-service physics teachers’ mental model of light to explain the wave-particle light concept in the photoelectric effect, compton effect, and blackbody radiation. This descriptive study involved 83 Physics Education students of the Faculty of Science and Technology of UIN Sunan Kalijaga who had taken the modern physics and quantum physics courses, in particulary at wave-particle light concept. The students’ mental model as pre-service physics teacher was obtained through 5 essay tests and semi-structures interview. Interview was conducted for 18 students who represent each mental model to explore the students’ mental models in more depth. The students’ mental model were determined through: 1) student answers and responses both in essay tests and in interview. 2) The answers were identified, collected and grouped based on similarity, uniqueness and variety of certain models. The results of this study show that pre-service physics teachers have three types of mental models, i.e. the particle model, the hybrid model, and the wave model. The particle model was the most frequently used by the students while explaining the photoelectric effect, light behaves as a particle until it hits the metal surface. The wave model was the most frequently used by the students while explaining the compton effect, light behaves as a sinus wave. The wave model was the most frequently used by the students while explaining the blackbody radiation, each light reflection reflects as light beam.
