Abstract
The story of the Prophet Abraham in the Qur'an not only depicts the historical journey of a prophet, but also contains universal values that remain relevant in kontemporer life, such as monotheism, the rejection of the worship of false symbols, spiritual contemplation, and a critical attitude toward collective belief systems. In a contemporary society filled with religious fanaticism, a culture of instant gratification in understanding religion, and the worship of religious figures or symbols without in-depth understanding, these values are crucial for reexamination and reflection. This study aims to answer the question: how should the verses from the story of the Prophet Abraham be interpreted in Ibnu Kathir's book, Qaṣaṣ al Anbiyā’, and how relevant are the values contained therein to the religious and social context of the contemporary era? This qualitative study uses a thematic interpretation (maudhū‘ī) approach, compiling and analyzing 58 verses from the story of the Prophet Abraham spread across several surahs. The interpretation is based on the work of Ibnu Kathir, particularly his book Qaṣaṣ al Anbiyā’, as a strong representation of tafsir bil ma’tsūr in terms of chain of transmission and narrative. The results of the study show that the interpretation of the verses of the story of the Prophet Ibrahim in Ibnu Kathir's Qaṣaṣ al Anbiyā' emphasizes the aspects of pure monotheism, rejection of idol worship, and Ibrahim's courage in facing false power and traditions. This interpretation depicts Ibrahim as a figure who not only had a straight faith, but also actively challenged the beliefs of the surrounding community with rational arguments and a critical attitude. These values are not only historical, but also ethical and spiritual. Through a thematic approach, the values presented, such as criticism of symbol worship, majority fanaticism, FOMO in religion, and courage in facing misleading religious authorities, become highly contextual to today's religious issues. Thus, the story of the Prophet Ibrahim serves as a source of inspiration in building a more reflective, critical religiosity, and rooted in rational faith.
