Abstract

This research aims to examine the vision of Environmental Awareness at Pondok Pesantren Al-Imdad Bantul, Yogyakarta, as a form of reception (living Qur’an) toward Qur’anic verses concerning environmental preservation. The study is motivated by the urgency of ecological crises that demand active contributions from religious institutions, especially Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), in grounding Qur’anic values related to the care and protection of nature. The research focuses on two main questions: (1) How is the reception of environmental-related Qur’anic verses manifested at Pondok Pesantren Al-Imdad? and (2) How is the vision of Environmental Awareness implemented as a realization of the Living Qur’an concept? This study adopts a qualitative-descriptive method using a field research approach. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with the pesantren leader, and documentation of environmentally related activities. The data were analyzed using the conceptual framework of Living Qur’an developed by Ahmad Rafiq, which classifies Qur’anic reception into textual, contextual, and functional forms. The results indicate that Pondok Pesantren Al-Imdad actualizes the values of environmental Qur’anic verses in a comprehensive and sustainable manner. Textual reception appears through the reading and explanation of ecological verses during religious gatherings and classroom sessions. Contextual reception is realized in practical activities such as waste sorting, tree planting, and environmental cleanliness. Functional reception is reflected in institutional policies, including the formation of the "Pasukan Semut" (Ant Troops), community involvement, and the establishment of an environmentally conscious culture. These three forms of reception demonstrate the process of transmission and transformation of Qur’anic values into the everyday social life of the pesantren community
