Abstract

This dissertation studies the relationship between Islamism and urbanization. Using social movement, urban study and ethnographic method approaches, the dissertation focuses on the presence of contemporary Islam movements, i.e. ProsperousJustice Party (Partai Keadilan Sejahtera=PKS), in a democracy system in a country, particularly Indonesia. It focuses more specifically on the strategies the party uses in the local political contest and its cadre‟s roles in the development of a city. The study uncovers some points. First, PKS is a transnational Islam movement in Indonesia and a Wahabi network in Indonesia. It also performs an alliance with two cosidered opposing ideology communities, Christian and Chinese. Some realistic arguments behind this conduct are that PKS undergoes a financial and human resource shortage, and possesses narrow political base in the society which hinders its maneuver when involved in local politics and in Islamic activities in a broader sense. In reality, there is no evidence that shows a relation between the Muslims, Christians and Chinese alliance and the shift of Islamic movement ideology nor the shift from Islamism to Post-Islamism. Second, the alliance is meant to improve the welfare of PKS‟ cadres, to keep the party‟s survival, and to divide up the functions of city by political, technical and bureaucratic approaches. Third, Muslims, Christians, and Chinese urban problem in Salatiga has not been solved entirely since 1999 which determines the strategy of economic-politic alliance. The dissertation gives some theoritic contributions as analysis framework. First, theory of urban area and Indonesian urban political movement contributes to developing social movement theory and urban study. Second, theory of local political tournaments in Indonesia contributes to developing the theory of urban politic movement and the theory of local politics in Indonesia. Third, theory of city space capitalization contributes to developing urban study.
