Abstract

Politics does not merely deal with achieving a ruling position. This implies that to reach any level in any organization at any time, one must put civility, politness, moral, and ethic forward to set a highly dignified nation. Political thoughts and behaviour always attract people to study as politics exists in every aspect of life in a society. It also underlies internal conflicts and wars. To most people, politics is described as a way to reach a desired position by doing whatever it takes. It does not mean, however, that politicians are immoral. There are, of course, honest, kind ones. But as a politician eagerly targets a position, he leaves his positive characters behind. In the history of Indonesia, M. Natsir played an important role in the world of Indonesian politics. His great ideas and manoeuvre proposing “Natsir integral motion” made him a figure attracting researchers to fulfil their curiosity. Being one of them, the author conducted a study entitled “M. Natsir‟s Political Ethic (Etika Politik M. Natsir)” focusing on his thoughts towards political ethic, factors influencing his thoughts, his contributions, and its relevance to Indonesia as nation. The study employed intelectual historical approach or the thought history. Intelectual history is the study of past thoughts, the study of concepts, values, and inherent characters of the object of study. Object of study was then split into two: material and formal. The former covered M. Natsir‟s thoughts on political ethic, whereas the later embraced the history of thoughts or the history of intelectual. The aim of the study was to explore his ideas on political ethic, i.e. politics was not merely a process of achieving power but also an effort in applying moral or ethic. It also aimed to grab the supporting factors including the conditions of social, politics, culture, and emerging ideas at that time. Other goals were to acknowledge his contributions to the nation and their relevance to nationalism. The results showed that M. Natsir thought that political ethic was an ethical base of power taken from religious rightness, whereas socio-politic situation at the time underlay his thoughts. Rivalry between Islam and secular nationalistsoccurred from 1930 to 1940. His involvement in politics and fought and his ideas before independence era were his real contributions. In the era of Soekarno and Soeharto, he also involved actively. The relation his activities and contributions before and after independence make this study relevant to the recent condition in Indonesia
