Abstract

Higher Education for Social Work in Indonesia has been started since the establishment of the Social Welfare Science discipline in the era of STISIP Widuri to the next generation such as Sosiatri STPMD. This is the foundation of social work practices that have been firmly rooted in the culture of Indonesian society. Both aforementioned institutions have covered issues of community development and social functioning, but they still adopt many concepts of social welfare from the West. On the other hand, the demand for participatory community development is increasingly prominent. Apart from the awareness of the importance of effective development communication, the process of understanding the local values of the community and the resources of local wisdom and religious practices is still a problem given the reference to social work practices in higher education has not revealed much of the perspective of community development that is integral to local values and has a close connection with the social religious background of the local community. This dissertation therefore argues that religion can be dialogue with the discipline of Social Work to be a typical work foundation in terms of three aspects: (1) Building of epistemology of religious scholarship and social work; (2) Religious values that become intrinsic motivation for social work practices; and (3) Understanding of the beneficiaries' religious social background that is better for effective communication potential. With an illustration of social work education in the Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies-Social Work program, the Postgraduate Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga and the social work practices of alumni in a number of work settings, this dissertation carries a historical justification and philosophy of Integration-Interconnection paradigm on education and social work practices as well as constructing the development of a community model that accommodates local values. The model is based on the synthesis of the Ann Jeffries community development model which is interconnected with the findings of local religious values and the mechanism of the use of the tool for the suitability of the educational culture and social work practices.
