Abstract

The research on spiritual economy of Muslim traders in the Ngruki region is carried out because of the researcher‟s anxiety about the phenomena of Muslim business traders. The Ngruki region is a unique area, because of its past history of poor-marginal abangan-syncretic Muslims in addition to the PKI (Indonesia Communist Party) base in the 1960s. The existence of the Al-Mukmin Islamic Boarding School (which is very influential in Ngruki) considered as salafy haraki with radical views (BNPT classification) should make Ngruki not develop in various fields, especially in the economic field. In fact, on the contrary, Ngruki has emerged as a new magnet in a congregation-based economy, which has an extraordinary turnover. This research is conducted to find and examine the factors that build the success and sustainability of the business. The above phenomena are addressed and examined through qualitative research to get definite answers and be able to be accounted for academically. Qualitative research provides an opportunity to examine phenomena holistically, in the sense that the phenomenon studied is an integrative entity because the actions of Muslim Ngruki traders are not actions caused by one but many interrelated factors. This research uses an interpretive approach in an effort to find an explanation of social or cultural events, based on the perspective and experience of the Muslim community of Ngruki traders. In general this approach is a social system that defines behavior in detail, being direct when observing. The findings show that economic success is determined not only by economic variables, but also by spiritual variables. Ngruki Muslim traders apply a spiritual economy that has its own characteristics, i.e., the salafi haraki economic concept. The Ngruki community places dhuha as an economic spirit and applies a work rhythm that is adjusted to the time of worship. Trust is built well at times of transactions between distributors and customers. There are indications that some entrepreneurs are trying to build an image. Concerning religious political maneuvers in business, they are divided into three groups, where groups of traders from santri and abangan groups
