Abstract

While many studies have examined the determinants of business resilience, few have focused on the roles of responsiveness and Muslim entrepreneur characteristics as central elements or effective analytical frameworks. This study aims to empirically test the factors influencing the business resilience of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), with a particular focus on the publishing industry in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) in the post- COVID-19 era. Using a sample of 142 publishing businesses, the researcher employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings show that the business environment significantly affects business resilience, whereas technology adoption does not produce a significant effect. Responsiveness plays a complex role, acting both as a direct determinant and as a mediating variable that bridges the influence of the business environment and technology adoption on business resilience. Moreover, the characteristics of Muslim entrepreneurs directly influence business resilience, although they do not function as moderating variables. This study makes two main contributions. First, it recommends responsiveness as a necessary attitude for publishing entrepreneurs to adopt in order to stay attuned to the business environment and make effective use of technology, thereby enhancing business sustainability. Second, it introduces the characteristics of Muslim entrepreneurs—such as spirituality, religiosity, entrepreneurial orientation, and social capital—as foundational traits that can help guide businesses through crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
