Abstract

This research explores Acehnese women's experiences of sexuality in the context of religious norms, culture, and strict gender relations. Women's sexuality is often silenced by social stigma, taboos, and patriarchal constructions that reduce women's bodies to objects of reproduction and service to men's needs. The main focus of this research is to understand how Acehnese women interpret their sexual satisfaction, and to uncover how stigma and social norms shape bodily experiences, sexual communication, and marital relationships. This research used a qualitative approach with feminist ethnographic methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four purposely selected Acehnese women (three married and one unmarried). Observations were also conducted in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar to understand the socio-cultural context. Data were analyzed using axial coding techniques to identify key themes. A feminist ethnographic approach was used to place women as active subjects in the narration of their experiences. Theoretically, this research relies on Maurice Merleau-Ponty's embodiment theory, which views the body not as a passive object, but as a living center of experience and meaning. The research findings show that Acehnese women face restrictions on sexual knowledge due to taboo religious and cultural norms. They develop non-verbal communication strategies (such as body cues or orgasmic pretense) to express sexual needs without violating norms. Social stigma and internalized shame limit women's ability to speak openly about sexuality, even within marriage. However, some women demonstrate agency through reinterpretation of religious teachings and subtle communication with partners. This research also reveals inequalities in sexual relations, where women's needs are often ignored, as well as the importance of comprehensive and gender-equitable sexual education.
