Abstract

This research examines how the changing roles and social modalities of widows in supporting the family economy in Bangsri Village, Jepara Regency. Problems in the field show that women who become widows either due to divorce or the death of a spouse experience significant status changes that have an impact on family, social and economic functions. This research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation of widows who work in the formal and informal sectors. Data analysis used Robert K. Merton's role set and structural functional theories, as well as Robert Putnam's social capital. The results showed that widowsin Bangsri Village faced the challenges of dual roles as mothers andheads of families, as well as various different perceptions from the community based on the personal experiencesof the informants, so that this made these widows have toadapt to their various new roles, they also utilized socialcapital in the form of cross-community networks, community trust and socialsupport from the community and family to support the family economy in order tocontinue to exist economically.
