Abstract

The quantity of persons whom choosing single relationship is increasing steadily every years, both are found in urban and rural states. Based on statistical data, the majority decision is taken by women. There are many factors behind the individual’s decision to be a single one. This study aims to determine the self concept of single women. This study useds a qualitiative method with a phenomenological approach. The criteria for the subject in this study were middle aged and not having a career, used two subjects which selected by purposive sampling technique. The results of the study show that the two subjects have different self concepts, which subject 1 tend to be positive’s self concept and subject 2 tend to be negative’s self concept. People around individuals have an important role an establish a self-concept. The affection shown by parents to their childrens is consistently able to foster a good self-concept. Aprreciation from the environment, self acceptance from the environment, emotional closeness to the environment, and parenting that is not too restraining will foster self-acceptance which increase their self-esteem. While this self-esteem is the basis for the formation of self concept. Although single status in middle age is relate closely to negative stigma, but this study shows there is no negative stigma that leads to their sigle status. This is due to many people who are also single in their environment and this similarity makes the subject get self-acceptance from her environment. Also in career, a high position in career has no influence on their subject’s self concept which depending on their expectations in that time. If the subject feels that the material is very important so low economic conditions will make her insecure, on the contrary if the subject considers that material is important with reasonable limit then subject will not feel low with others in differences economic levels.
