Abstract

This study aims to understand the description of the spirituality of breast cancer patients and the factors that influence the spirituality of breast cancer patients in Yogyakarta. This research used a qualitative study with the method of Phenomenology. The data collection was performed using the method of observation and interviews conducted on two informants of breast cancer patients. The results of this study show how the spirituality of breast cancer patients before and after their illness. Before suffering from the illness, there are 4 themes that appeared : having constant business but always felt inadequate, she believed in psychics, practiced religious rituals without feeling close to God, and she didn’t always involve God in daily life. After getting her illness, there are 5 themes that appear are : the informant considered the pain she experienced as a form of repentance to God, God’s test, and God’s compassion, felt united and close to God, got help and miracles of God, feeling calm and having a high spirit of life, and provides support to fellow cancer patients. The factors that influence spirituality in breast cancer patients are: 1) age 2) family 3) previous life experiences 4) change and crisis 5) bound in socio-religious activities. In this study showed there were changes in spirituality of both informant before and after breast cancer.
