Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out why the head of Madrasah apply a professional improvement strategy for teachers, to know the level of professionalism of teachers, and to know what is the supporting factor and the inhibitory in improving Professionalism of teachers at MTs N 1 Yogyakarta. This type of research is qualitative, by taking the background and reviewing the phenomena occurring in MTs N 1 Yogyakarta. By method in this study with non participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Later with the theory of Miles and Hubermen, the authors perform data analysis by reducing data, presenting data, withdrawal of conclusions and verification. For the validity testing of the researchers do with observation and triangulation diligence. The discussion of data analysis is descriptively qualitative. The results of this research show, first that the professional improvement strategy of teachers was implemented by the principal at MTs N 1 Yogyakarta, because; Teachers ' competence is low, the quality of teacher learning is poor, and the teacher's professional attitude is concern. While the strategy of the head of Madrasah to increase the professionalism of teachers MTs N 1 Yogyakarta, namely; Support Active activities MGMP, conducting internal coaching, special training (internal and external trainings), advanced education, seminars and workshops, support the certification of teachers, provide motivation, performance assessment and supervision in continue, Writing materials, revitalizing performance and teacher work programs, building teacher commitments, and comparative study. Both the impact of the teacher's professional improvement strategy in MTs N 1 Yogyakarta is: competence increases, learning quality is better, the value of learning outcomes is increased, and the results of accreditation increased to a value of 97 ( Rank A). The three supporting factors in the professionalism improvement of teachers MTs N 1 Yogyakarta are; and support of the head of Madrasah, cooperation with other parties, and facilities and infrastructure. While the inhibitory factors in the improvement of professionalism of teachers in MTs N 1 Yogyakarta namely: comfort zone teachers and budget funds are limited.
