Abstract

Language skills that must be mastered by students one of which is writing skills because writing can indicate a person's intellectual level. Students are required to be able to put their ideas and thoughts into a writing with good linguistic knowledge. meanwhile, difficulties experienced by students included difficulty in using grammar rules, vocabulary selection, and sentence construction. Meanwhile, in the world of scientific studies, there are various types of methods that can be used in analyzing a topic or problem, one of which is the Critical Discourse Analysis method developed by Norman Fairclough. The method offers a discourse model in which to analyze a text using three dimensions or aspects. Namely the first, Linguistic / Linguistic aspects. Second, aspects of Discourse Practice. and Third, aspects of Social Practice. This type of research is a combination or mixed method research that uses a quantitative exploratory strategy with the Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The subjects in this study were fourth grade students at MIN 2 Sleman. Data collection techniques using the technique of documentation, observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Qualitative data were analyzed using Critical Discourse Analysis and quantitative data analysis. The results of this study are: First, students still experience difficulties in writing skills, especially writing essays. This can be seen from the results of students' essay analysis which found many errors including grammar, use of diction and sentence formation both in terms of cohesion and coherence as well as giving meaning in each writing. Student writing also has a different social and cultural context that is influenced by the situation and conditions at which the essay was made. Second, the level of students' writing skills is still not good. it is based on the results of the analysis conducted using the Critical Discourse Analysis method. Third, the results of the analysis are also supported by the results of quantitative data analysis which shows a significant relationship that is 0.295> 0.220 with a positive relationship direction. This means that the higher the Critical Discourse Analysis, the students' free essay writing skills will increase.
