Abstract

This thesis, entitled "Interpersonal Conflict Post-Conversion (Study of Post-Conversion of Converts at the Yogyakarta Center for Converts)" is a field research that is motivated by interpersonal conflicts of converts. Interpersonal conflict among converts occurs in the family environment and friendships caused by disagreement with the decision to convert to Islam. The researcher's interest lies in the process of resolving interpersonal conflicts. The way for converts to resolve conflicts is through negotiation and mediation with assistance from the Mualaf Center Yogyakarta. The role and contribution of the Mualaf Center Yogyakarta for converts is aimed at addressing socio-religious issues in the lives of converts. In conducting this thesis study, the researcher does not come out of two problem statements, namely: 1) Why do converts experience interpersonal conflict? 2) What is the resolution effort made by converts in dealing with post-conversion interpersonal conflicts? Thus, the thesis study conducted aims to answer the two formulated problems. This study uses a social psychology approach and Lewis R. Rambo's conversion theory model, Simon Fisher's conflict stage analysis, conflict management style, and conflict resolution. Researchers used the life history method to reveal the experience of religious converts and hidden information based on the life history of converts relating to post-conversion conflicts. Data collection includes participatory observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. Researchers used 6 respondents in data collection by disguising the names of respondents, including Vino, Idon, Yudi, Yanto, Rina, and Arni. Data analysis was performed using data reduction procedures, data presentation and data verification using the triangulation method, and drawing conclusions. The results showed: 1) Sources of interpersonal conflict between converts with family and relatives from the previous religious environment in the form of conflict based on differences in personality, differences in cultural and religious values, different interests or needs in religion. The existence of negative prejudices and stereotypes accompanied by feelings of disappointment and frustration can develop through socialization processes within the scope of previous religious groups, resulting in discrimination and acts of violence. 2) How to resolve interpersonal conflicts of converts relate to the consequences of post-conversion. The converts try to understand the conversion to parents and close friends who come from the previous religious environment in order to avoid misperceptions. The consequences after the conversion are similar to the religious stability of the converts which is shown by using the principles in Islamic teachings, namely tabayun through negotiation and mediation processes.
