Abstract

The background of this research stems from the many problems that occur in Indonesia today, such as corrupt government officials, abuse of office, falsification of documents and others. In addition to the government, young people use drugs, drink alcohol, free sex, fight parents, bullying and others. These problems are cynical arising because of the lack of inculcation of character, morals, character in this nation when they were growing among families, educational institutions, the surrounding community or anywhere, especially in Indonesia as a whole, due to the lack of insight and reference there is in character education or inculcation. Then good references are needed and by the State of Indonesia, which is religious and eastern. Thus, this study aims (1) to find out the scope of character education according to Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewantara, (2) To find out the difference in character education approaches between Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewanatara, (3) To find out the differences in the forming environment character education of children according to Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewantara. This research is library research. Data sources in this study are original books written by Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewantara related to character education as primary data and supporting books, research results, articles, papers, newspapers, magazines relating to the thoughts of Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewantara as the secondary source. Data collection was carried out using biographical Reconstruction techniques, by describing the life history and thoughts of Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewantara and Literature reviews, through a review of primary and secondary data about early childhood character education which was then summarized to determine the limits of the discussion. Data analysis was carried out using the Content Analysis Technique (content analysis). This technique seeks to interpret the ideas or ideas of Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewantara regarding early childhood character education with data reduction steps, data display, data verification, and conclusions. The results of this study indicate that Al-Ghazali and Ki Hajar Dewantara are two extraordinary people in the world of education, especially in the field of character education. Both of these figures have differences in terms of character; Al-Ghazali uses the term morality while Ki Hajar Dewantara uses the term character. Besides, these two figures have the same goal of educating people, both intelligent minds, attitudes and behaviours. The fundamental difference of the thoughts of these two figures lies in the rationale, where Al-Ghazali relies on the explanation of his character education on monotheism and religion. In contrast, Ki Hajar Dewantara relies on the explanation of his character education on nationalism and culture. In the scope of values, methods, approaches and forming environment given to early childhood character education, these two figures have different thoughts. However, this difference gave birth to a concept of character education that collaborates on faith and culture that aims to make children of character by religious law without ignoring Indonesian culture.
