Abstract

In a security system, a hash is very instrumental in improving data security. The hash is applied in the authentication process to be able to maintain data integrity and protect data from illegal access. Various ways can be done to improve the hash algorithms security, one of them is use salting techniques. However, the traditional implementation of salt as a prefix or postfix is not enough to ensure safe data, as various tools are used to crack the ciphertext. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a password and salt combination scheme on the security level of a hash algorithm. Some combination scheme designs will be prepared and given some sample data in the form of passwords and salt. The data is then tested for security using Hashcat. Based on the results of the study, password and salt combination schemes affect the security of the hash algorithm. The increase obtained from the combined schemes published by previous researchers (scheme 3) was 49.29% when compared to schemes 4 and 5. While schemes 1 and 2 were far below the schemes of 3.4 and 5.
