Abstract

The focus of this study is on the background of the development of dynamic times and social changes due to modernization influencing the character of the present generation. Unfortunately education in Indonesia in general emphasizes formal education but tends to override character education. Therefore, character education must be instilled in children as early as possible because character education is the main key to build a nation. In general, the implementation of character education has not been successfully implemented by schools. As a result, schools as educational institutions must improve themselves by improving their management in an effort to improve the character of children as the nation's generation in realizing the goals of character education. This research is a field research in the form of qualitative research which took place in Model Kindergarten Sleman. Data validity test uses source and data triangulation method. Data analysis used the theories of Agus Wibowo and Schein with data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing or verification. The results showed: First, character education planning, which includes: 1) planning of character values in the curriculum and learning, consisting of: a) character education is accommodated in the vision, mission and goals of the school; b) preparation of character education programs. 2) Cultivation of character values in educators and education personnel. 3) Instilling character values through student coaching. 4) Instilling character values through the management of infrastructure and financing. Second, organization of character education is carried out by division of tasks, responsibilities and authorities. Third, implementation of character education is done in 2 ways: 1) direction of the principal; which includes: a) provide instructions and explanations regarding the implementation of character education; b) provide opportunities for teachers and staff to participate; c) involving all school members in the planning of character education; 2) the implementation of character education by carrying out programs including: a) student-led conferences; b) outing; c) psychological consultations for parents / guardians (parenting); d) SCIENCE practices; e) meeting time, f) student presentations, g) introduction to Javanese culture. Fourth, controlling character education consists of 4 things, like: 1) leading and directing children in the education process; 2) observation and correction of character education; 3) reporting on the results of character education; 4) motivation for character education.
