Abstract

Interpersonal communication is the process of communication that is considered the most effective in terms of the effort of changing attitudes, behaviour or opinions of a person. There are no exception to interpersonal communication conducted by the orphanage caregivers in building independence on the mentally disabled at Bina Siwi Bantul Orphanage. The purpose of this research is to find out how interpersonal communication that is done by the caretakers of the orphanage to building independence on the disabled mentally. in this study the theory used is a interpersonal communication approach by Devito. This study uses qualitative research type, with the technique of data collection through observation, in-depth interviews with informers and documentation. The results of this research show that in the process of establishing self-reliance on hearing disabilities, the board always applies five aspects of interpersonal communication, because it leads to disabilities that require patience and a high level of caring. So by implementing the five aspects of interpersonal communication, the communication process can run effectively. So that will affect in building the disability independence Disabled in the orphanage Bina Siwi Bantu
