Abstract

Elephant grass (P. purpureum) is a water pollution stress resistant plant. Thus characteristics were suspected influenced by the presence of a consortium of certain rhizobacteria. Literature studies and observations show that rhizobacteria show PGPR (Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria) characteristics, to prove this assumption, isolation and characterization of rhizobacteria were conducted on samples that taken from the roots of elephant grass that growing in the banks of the Gajah Wong river. In details, characterizations include colony and cell morphology, sugar fermentation ability, SIM, physiological tests, oxygen requirements, citric hydrolysis, starch hydrolysis, and extracellular enzymes. The process resulted on 13 bacterial isolates that showed PGPR characteristics. Further study of the 13 bacterial isolates, shows that PGPR from elephant grass (P. purpureum) can be used as a potential biological control agent based on its ability to produce extracellular cellulase enzymes. This is due, the 13 isolates can show the similarity of phenotypic characters with Genus Azospirillum, Azotobacter, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Microbacterium and Micrococcus.
