Abstract

Synthesis of ZnO-Xanthan Gum composite has been synthesized as a photocatalyst for photodegradation of methyl orange dyes. This study aims to examine the synthesis of ZnO-Xanthan Gum composites with the sol-gel method as a photocatalyst for photodegradation of methyl orange dyes, examine molecular structure, band gap energy (Eg), and crystallinity of ZnO-Xanthan Gum composites, and the ability of photocatalysis of ZnO composites. -Xanthan Gum against photodegradation of methyl orange dyes with variations in contact time, concentration of dyes, and pH of methyl orange solution. Preparation of ZnO-Xanthan Gum synthesis was carried out by the sol-gel method using zinc acetate dihydrate (Zn(CH3COO)2.2H2O) and Xanthan Gum as precursors and ethanol (C2H5OH) as a solvent. The synthesis of ZnO-Xanthan Gum was calcined with calcination temperature of 500 ℃ and the addition of Xanthan Gum was 0.4%. The results of ZnO-Xanthan Gum crystals were characterized using UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR), and UV-Vis Diffusion Reflectance (DRS). The activity test was carried out in the presence of variations of contact time 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 hours, variations in the concentration of methyl orange 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 ppm, and pH variations of methyl orange solution 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. The results showed that the ZnO-Xanthan Gum crystal had formed a 2θ diffraction pattern that is 36.230 ° with a crystal size of 39.04 nm. The molecular structure is also indicated in the typical absorption numbers of 2931.80 cm-1 and 493.78 cm-1. The magnitude of the band gap energy of ZnO-Xanthan Gum is 3.00 eV. The results of the activity test showed that optimum photodegradation was achieved with a contact time of 9 hours at pH 3, the kinetics of the photodegradation reaction following a first-order pseudo with a rate constant of 0.1053 hours-1 Photodegradation activity decreases with increasing concentration of methyl orange dyes.
