Abstract

Resocialization is a process of returning people with schizophrenia (PwS) in society to rediscover their social functioning. This research aims to identify the process of resocialization which people with schizophrenia go through to rediscover their identity and social functioning in society. The participants of the research consisted of two key informants and three significant others who were selected using a purposive technique. The research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations and were analyzed by applying thematic analysis techniques. The results showed that both key informants went through various processes to find their social functioning. The first process was the emergence of early symptoms that were affected by traumatic experiences, triggering factors, and genetic factors. The second process was desocialization or the loss of social functioning. The third process was the course of the disorder, which includes the appearance of advanced symptoms, stages of treatment, and post-hospitalization changes. Community assessment, emotional response, community acceptance, and community and caregiver support help improve people with schizophrenia's ability to rebuild self-motivation and confidence to live the reality. The fourth process was the dynamics of society towards PwS. And the next process is PwS’s adjustment to the new identity, PwS optimize their social functioning by striving to restore social relationships, not getting exposed to stigma, and seeking self-tranquility through spiritual approaches
