Abstract

This thesis discussed about the curative conservation of rare newspapers at Jogja Library Center Unit. The purpose of this study was to describe the conservation activities of rare newspapers in the Jogja Library Center. In addition, to find out the obstacles and solutions in carrying out curative conservation activities of rare newspapers. This research was conducted at the Conservation Unit of the Library and Archives Service of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DPAD DIY) using a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques used observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Analysis of the collected data was carried out by reducing the data, then the data was presented in a narrative form, and the conclusions. The validity of the data was tested by means of a credibility test (lengthen observations, sources of triangulation, and member checks). The result of this research was that the curative conservation activities of rare newspapers did not yet have a written newspaper preservation policy. In curative conservation, preservation used Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) . The SOP used was an SOP made in general for all library materials. The implementation of Curative Conservation in DPAD DIY included: identification, documentation, cleaning, deacidification, mending, lamination, encapsulation, and protective boxes making. The constraints faced were the condition of rare newspapers that require too much curative conservation while Human Resources (HR), as well as limited facilities and infrastructure made curative conservation activities not optimal. The solution to overcoming these obstacles was by transferring rare newspaper media to digital form, making newspaper clippings, collaborating with outside agencies, adding human resources and making a priority scale for rare newspapers based on the damage and indigo conditions of each rare newspaper.
