Abstract

This study aims to describe the utilization of Maktabah Syāmilah (MS) and Maktabah Syumila NU Fiha (MSNU) at pesantren. This issue was originated from the use of Maktabah Syāmilah software in traditional pesantren (salaf), which have long been known for their scientific traditions based on Islamic classical books. MS contains books by the Arab Wahabi ulema, which later triggered the birth of Maktabah Syumila NU Fiha containing digital yellow books (Islamic classical books) delivered in salaf pesantren. Both software serve as a contested discourse in this study. On this basis, the purpose of this study was to uncover problems regarding the pesantren’s response to the contestation of digital authority in the use of Maktabah Syamilah and Syumila NU along with their contestation and problems. This is a qualitative research with a descriptive-interpretive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using data reduction, presentation, and conclusion methods. Data about the use of Syamilah software and Syumila NU Fiha were taken from 3 pesantren, namely Pesantren Assalafiyyah Mlangi Yogyakarta, Pesantren Hidayatul Mubtadi'in Lirboyo Kediri, and Pesantren Salafiyyah Syafi'iyyah Sukorejo Situbondo. The three pesantren are salaf pesantren, which use the yellow book as the main learning resources. The analysis was based on the theoretical framework of the principle of information freedom in digital democracy, contestation in technology and ideology, and the concept of digital authority. This study revealed three main conclusions; First, pesantren had not provided students with freedom of access to digital information as a way to optimize the use of Syamilah and Syumila NU software to search for information on classical books. Second, the created technology was not value-free. In fact, there was a heavily contested values between the theological ideology of Wahabi and Aswaja NU, as well as the contestation of authority in the different form of the yellow books, between the printed version and the digital version. In addition, there was also a notable contestation of market segment of kiai authority through digital sources with a continuously evolving cycle along with human creativity. Third, there was a contestation of digital authority in the use of Shamilah and Syumila NU software as an expression of intellectual freedom and digital democracy to select authoritative digital religious information sources as a means of information retrieval in pesantren. On this basis, the author’s suggests that there should be an effort in providing students with freedom of access to digital information as a way to ensure the optimum use of software of classical books in supporting the learning process in Salaf Pesantren. It is recommended to have a digital literacy training for santri to improve their digital skills in a more moderate theological understanding.
