Abstract

This research is motivated by the growing phenomenon of most housewives who are very active at home using social networks, be it WA, TIK-TOK, Instagram, Telegram, or FB. In fact, the activity of accessing social networks or social media has become a routine or habit that cannot be missed which has an impact on changing self-concept. With the occurrence of this phenomenon, the researcher wants to know more about what factors cause housewives to use social media, then how are the dynamics of housewives 'self-concept, besides why social media affects housewives' self-concept, and what are the impacts the use of social media on the family felt by housewives. In answering the questions described above, the researcher used a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods and the theory that researchers used in self-concept research was Carl Rogers' theory. The subjects in this study were ten housewives who actively use social media. Based on the results of the study, obtained some field data related to the dynamics of the self-concept of house-wives who use social media, namely: (1). The researcher found that social media greatly influenced self-concept, where the ten informants had positive and negative self-concepts. The informant's self-percentage to himself that he is a good person, friendly, humorous, also acceptable in the community and the people around him. informants can reach out and see their self-image through other people's assessments of them and have the ability to evaluate themselves. On the other hand, researchers still find that there are still housewives who feel inferior both in terms of family and in terms of life after using social media. (2) From the interviews, there are three motivations for urban and rural housewives in accessing social media, namely for updating information, connecting with old and new friends, and also for entertainment. (3) The results of the interview show that there is a gap between the reality and expectations of the informants, but some are helped through social media. Like the positive impact obtained, namely the increased insight about parenting and religion on housewives. The negative impact caused is to make the person individualistic, time-consuming and give birth to a desire to exceed others in terms of life and compare one's own life with others.
